The popularity of rowing workouts has surged since Netflix’s hit House of Cards debuted, featuring star Kevin Spacey rowing while contemplating his next ruthless move, observes SneakerReport.com. The site says Manhattanites are now “flocking” to trendy new “rowing studios.”

Forbes Riley, long the doyenne of health-and-fitness infomercials, is hitting cable networks this spring with a new series of her Forbes Living TV talk show.
The fitness infomercial queen’s new series is aimed at athletes and exercisers of all skill levels who are looking to improve a personal best or master their sport or fitness regimen.
“Whether you’ve mastered a fitness routine or have become a pro at a favorite sport, there’s always room for improvement,” reads a news release about the series. “And to continue seeing results, fitness enthusiasts and athletes can’t stick to the same routine. Finding new challenges and ways to further develop and perfect skills is important to achieving peak performance.”
Forbes Riley, who claims the mantle of “America’s Most Loved Health & Fitness Innovator,” has been a familiar television face for decades, as an actress, spokeswoman and TV host. She is in the Fitness Hall of Fame, and has sold over a billion dollars’ worth of products.
Good news for those worried that your New Year’s workout regimen will make you want to devour everything in the fridge. Exercise does not appear to up the calories that exercisers consume, according to a new study reported on RunnersWorld.com.
“It is commonly believed that individuals increase energy intake in response to physical activity or exercise training,” concludes the study’s team, from the University of Kansas Medical Center. “However, overall we found no consistent, compelling evidence that any level of increased physical activity or exercise has any impact on energy intake.”
That means exercisers don’t tend to eat more to compensate for the increased activity. So if you are chowing down way more than you did before you began your regimen, it may not be your body telling you to eat more. It could be your brain telling you it’s OK to eat more now that you’re moving around more.
This just highlights the fact that any fitness regimen should include both physical activity and some type of food plan.
As part of their New Year’s resolution, many people are turning to fitness regimes such as P90X3 and machines like the Bowflex MAX Trainer and the Tour de Force Centennial. While they can be effective, you have to watch for a few red flags in fitness pitches.
“Lose weight without exercising.”
While it is possible to lose weight without exercising, “you will end up sacrificing your health, energy and metabolism,” writes Libby Norris of Canada AM. “The number one reason we gain weight as we age is loss of lean tissue. Not using and losing your muscle mass as you age reduces your resting metabolic rate . . . which is your fat-burning furnace!
“Burn 1,000 calories in one workout.”
Read the small print, and you’ll find that this calorie-count represents the extreme top-end count that possible. Several factors affect the number of calories that can be burned, including age, weight, gender and workout intensity. The infomercials, Norris points out, make high-intensity workouts look like a breeze.
Studies that aren’t from recognized health authorities often hold no weight. Ads citing studies from disreputable sources often take a dubious claim and run with it.
“See results in just minutes per day.”
You can get results by working out just five minutes a day, but it’ll take a lot longer to see those results than with a lengthier, higher-impact regimen.
As Norris writes: “How quickly you get results is directly related to the balance of changes you may need to make in a variety of areas related to weight and fitness – eating, activity, body composition, health, sleep and stress. Quick results are most often short-lived!”
Now bicycling enthusiasts can train just like the pros in the comfort of their own home—while experiencing the same French countryside and routes enjoyed by Tour de France contestants. Continue reading →
