Public spaces were a little more tuneful back in the 1980s. Sure, some music lovers were listening privately with the new Sony Walkman. But the eighties was also the decade of the boombox. Dedicated music lovers made cassette mixtapes from vinyl singles and LPs, hoisted improbably large and loud portable stereos onto their shoulders, then traveled the urban landscape on foot to lovingly share their favorite music whether you wanted to hear it or not. They spent all their disposable income and overflowed landfills with mounds of the D batteries giant boomboxes consumed eight or ten at a time.
Today, you can share your music with the public without dislocating your shoulder, thanks to the new Music Bullet. It’s a tiny portable speaker you can hold in the palm of your hand. Connect it to the headphone jack on your iPod or smartphone, and you’re ready to blast your latest playlist at volumes that might violate some local noise ordinances. Music Bullet has big sound with kickin’ bass, and it’s rechargeable. And you don’t need to carry it around. Set it down on the sidewalk and dance around it. Bring it inside and liven up that boring city council meeting or public restroom. You don’t need a permit to carry the Music Bullet. Here’s where to order.

The musical landscape of the 1960s wasn’t all about sex, drugs and rock and roll. Radio and record racks made plenty of room for Andy Williams, Bobby Vinton, Dionne Warwick, Petula Clark, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Al Hirt, Ed Ames, Vikki Carr, The Lettermen, Shriley Bassey, and many other artists that weren’t quite ready to rock. They’re all here in this new Time-Life CD collection, Pop Memories of the ’60s. No Beatles, Stones, Cream, Hendrix, Blue Cheer, Jefferson Airplane or Led Zeppelin. Just easy listening goodness. Forget the Xanax. Just rip these discs to your iPod, slap on the earbuds and experience instant bliss.

Your Savvy Shopper is a HUGE fan of classic country music. This week I’m excited to introduce The Golden Age of Country 10-CD Collection from Time-Life to a jaded world desperately in need of a dose of real, authentic, classic country music from the 1950s and 60s. Country artists tended to re-record most of their repertoire every time they changed record labels, but Time-Life keeps it real by always using the original classic recordings. Hank Williams, George Jones, Buck Owens, Ray Price, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Elvis, Roger Miller, and many, many more. No matter what kind of contemporary music you like best, some of its roots are here in classic country. I’ve spent over thirty years collecting these songs on LP, cassette, CD and MP3. With The Golden Age of Country, you can get them all in one collection. The well-produced infomercial is hosted by country legend Mickey Gilley and TV personality Lorianne Chase from Crook and Chase.
