Vince Offer
Vince Offer (real name Offer Shlomi) has been pretty media-shy lately, but he did agree to an interview yesterday with CNBC, whose viewers deemed ShamWow the best As Seen On TV product of all-time.
Lots of interesting tidbits here, but it really caught our attention when Vince was asked if he’s the next Billy Mays.
“I don’t want to be. I’m in the film business, this is not my career.”
So we guess that ShamWow and Slap Chop profits are going to be funding The Underground Comedy Movie 2. At least Vince can’t sue Anna Nicole Smith this time around.

Naked Cowboy in Times Square
Wikipedia describes Robert John Burck, better known as the Naked Cowboy, is an American busker and prominent fixture of New York City’s Times Square. His routine consists of playing guitar wearing only cowboy boots, a hat, and underwear briefs, with the guitar strategically placed to give the illusion of nudity.” So, naturally, he’s marketing Naked Cowboy Naked Whey, his own brand of flavored whey supplement.
Your Savvy Shopper is 5’11″ and 140 lbs. We do a few curls now and then, but we don’t have the need to bulk up like Mr. Naked Cowboy. So we really don’t know what makes one whey product better than another. But if we were in the market for a better whey, certainly the endorsement of a guy who plays guitar on street corners in his underwear would play a major role in our decision-making process.

My shoes are organized and out of the way. Yay!
Your Savvy Shopper loves shoes.
Shoes of leather, canvas too. Black shoes, white shoes, shoes of blue.
Shoes with laces, shoes with heels, some with buckles and some with wheels.
Shoes in piles on my closet floor. In the bedroom, in the hallway, by the front and back doors.
Too many shoes, oh what can be done? When I want to wear two, I can find only one.
Then I saw a commercial while watching TV. I could buy one Shoes Under and get one for free.
Now my shoes are protected and out of the way. Stored neatly in pairs, and there they will stay.
Until the day comes when I wear them again, they’ll be ready and waiting and under the bed.

Toasty Wrap AKA Snuggie
As we’ve mentioned many times before, knockoff and copycat products are a mainstay of As Seen On TV Products. So it’s not unusual that someone would try and capitalize on the popularity of Snuggie, the fleece blanket with sleeves. What IS unusual is that the commercial for Toasty Wrap (a fleece blanket with sleeves) is the very same spot with different graphics and voiceover. A Snuggie is a Snuggie is a Snuggie — unless it’s a Toasty Wrap. Take your pick. The price, and even the free bonus book light, is the same.

We were fascinated by this story featured on Wednesday’s NPR Show All Things Considered. A.J. Khubani, President and CEO of Telebrands, revealed the secret of why As Seen On TV products do so well during periods of severe recession. Other advertisers, like car makers, aren’t buying as much commercial time on TV. This allows direct response companies to buy up the excess inventory from stations and networks at the lowest possible price, bombarding potential buyers with pitches for As Seen On TV Products. Glad somebody is profiting from this horrible economy.

Billy Mays with OrangeGlo and OxiClean, the products that built his reputation.
We spend over 100 hours each week with our eyes glued to our three 24″ monitors, searching every nook and cranny of the Internets for news of Billy Mays to share with you, and still we missed this very insightful interview in Conde Nast Portfolio which ran sometime before Election Day 2008. In this interview with Lloyd Grove, with many questions more of interest to a business rather than a consumer audience, we learn many interesting tidbits about Billy and the world of DRTV, including the following:
- Billy Mays is a Republican who supported John McCain
- He really believes in each product he represents
- Sometimes he reimburses unhappy buyers from his own pocket
- His muscles get “real spasmed up around my butt”
- “The best things in life are free and $19.95.”
- Billy’s commercials are dubbed in 57 languages
- He writes most of his own copy
- His belief is that many of the people he annoys are the first to buy his products
- He’ll never change his approach, because “if it’s not broken don’t fix it.”
- The Billy Mays brand is based on trust
- All you Billy haters better look out, because you’re going to see a lot of him in the future. He just had hip replacement surgery and he feel so good that he wants to “work 10 years’ worth in the next five years.”
